Comprehensive vs Third-Party Motor Insurance in Kenya: What’s the Difference?

Motor insurance is one of the most common forms of insurance in Kenya, but many drivers still struggle to understand the difference between comprehensive and third-party cover.

Third-Party Insurance

Third-party insurance is the minimum legal requirement for vehicles in Kenya.

It mainly covers:

  • Damage caused to another person’s vehicle

  • Injury to third parties

  • Property damage involving third parties

However, it does NOT cover:

  • Damage to your own car

  • Theft of your vehicle

  • Fire damage to your vehicle

This option is usually cheaper and suitable for lower-value vehicles or owners looking for basic legal compliance.

Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance provides broader protection.

It may include:

  • Accidental damage

  • Theft

  • Fire

  • Windscreen cover

  • Political violence and terrorism (optional)

  • Excess protection

  • Courtesy car options depending on insurer

Comprehensive cover is especially important for newer vehicles or vehicles with higher market value.

Why vehicle value matters

In Kenya, comprehensive motor premiums are often calculated as a percentage of the vehicle’s insured value. Vehicle age, usage, claims history, and type of car can also affect pricing.

That is why getting professional advice before selecting a policy is important.
